#1 Rated Custom Multi-Level Deck Design Contractors

Outdoor Multi-level Deck Design With Wood or Composite Decking

Multi-level decks typically exist in two different environments. One is where the interior of your home from the living room to the dining room to the family room there may have elevation changes on that main floor. If your dining room has a door that leads outside and then there's two steps down to your living room and the living room also has a door that leads outside the threshold of the door on the outside of the house require that those decks be installed at two different elevations.

The other deck scenario where we see a lot of multi-level decks being requested, is when your home’s rear exit is close to the ground, like 2 to 3 feet above the ground and you're wanting a deck where you carry out and you don't necessarily want rails on the full length of the deck so you may have the deck step down a few steps to a location where you no longer need other rails.

Custom Outdoor Multi-Level Deck Designer Who Cares

As a reminder, rails are required anywhere in an elevation where the deck is 28 inches or higher. The closer you get to the ground oftentimes homeowners are interested in minimizing the amount of railing, when you have a house that's fairly close to the ground, it's visually appealing to design it in the way to where you have different elevations in different spaces

What is a Multi Level Deck?

Multi-level decks are a outdoor decks that provide a very functional and aesthetically pleasing way to really custom design your outdoor deck to have separate spaces. When custom designing your deck, you may decide to add a pool or hot tub so then you can have one level of the deck be designed specifically for that. Then you can have other levels of a deck that have stairs that lead to a level designed just for comfortable seating or a outdoor dining area. It's a great way to make the most of your outdoor living space with different levels. Especially if you have kids and want them to have an area to play but still be able to be out there with them.

The pros of the multi-level deck is that they have a lot of visual interest and depending on the height you can go with or possibility without railing. With Multi-level decks, you can dine on one level, then lounge on another level. Another option is that you can have a walkway that’s at a different elevation. It adds a lot of visual interest and it gives you more options with rails or not having rails. Those are the pros of the multi-level deck.

How much is a multi level deck?

Multi-level decks are a cool way to add more space to your home. They can span two or three stories, giving you more room to play, hang out, and entertain. They usually cost around $50 per square foot, but the price can range from $30 to $75 depending on how big the deck is and what materials you use.

The downside or really the cost considerations of a multi-level deck, is that it’s always going to cost more than a single level elevation deck. This has to do with the amount of supports, framing and caissons that are necessary. When you add materials and other levels, then there is obviously more materials needed and this increases the cost.

How do I make my deck usable all year round?

If you live in Colorado, you want to use your deck all year round. By adding outdoor heating solutions such as patio heaters, umbrella heaters, and fire pits, which are ideal for creating a year-round deck experience, you can enjoy your patio or deck regardless of the weather! Make your outdoor space the place to be with these handy heat sources to protect you and your family from the cold.

If you have a deck that's 30 ft across and it goes out 12 feet and it’s all one single elevation. Across that 30 ft you may have a support post on each end and 2 in the middle, possibly 1 in the middle depending on the size of beam we use. If you were to install a multi-level deck across that 30 ft, let’s say that 20 ft of it is at 1 elevation and then it drops down and then you got 10 feet at another elevation, you're always going to end up with more support posts and additional framing that's required, to accomplish that step down. So multi-level decks aren’t for everybody, but if it makes sense to the budget, they certainly add a lot of visual interest.
