Design An Outdoor Custom Pergola With Open, Louvered or Stacked Style

You're having a deck built and you're looking to have some sort of the shade structure installed and the budget doesn't necessarily allow for a fixed roof structure or you don't want a completely dried in shaded space, you just want some shade throughout the day. That would be a pergola! A pergola is something that we would be building out of rough Cedar and you have a variety of different designs to choose from. You have open style pergolas, you have louvered pergolas, and you have stacked pergolas.

Build a Beautiful Pergola Using Rough Cedar Material For Our Colorado Climate

The biggest consideration when installing a Pergola is the material and we believe it's best that is constructed out of rough cedar and our climate, which is very harsh from Summer the winter and spring to fall, with high UV and an extreme sunlight, all other building materials for pergolas and shade structures, just don't do well in our Broomfield, Aurora and Denver Metro area climate.

Build Pergolas Over Decks For A Gorgeous Outdoor Living Space

I have seen several people that have installed a pressure-treated pergola. Potentially the contractor that didn't let them know there would be issues with the pressure treated lumber. Pressure-treated lumber is used for deck framing. That's it in our climate. You don’t use it for anything else besides deck framing for the most parts.

Can you put a pergola on decking?

If you're looking to upgrade your deck, adding a pergola is a great option! To ensure the highest quality construction and longevity, you'll need specialized hardware, such as post bases that are designed to be visible, timber bolts to connect the wood for your top frame, and post-to-beam support that has been hot-dipped galvanized.

Pergolas our constructed out of rough Cedar. Red Wood is not necessarily available any longer in the dimensions that are necessary in this area. So it really just comes down to the rough Cedar which is naturally rot resistant. If you don't do anything to maintain it it eventually “silver's out” and you know if you’ve seen a barn that's 100 years old that's cedar cladded. It's silvered out in that sense, so you don't necessarily have to stain it all the time although staining it will prevent it from cracking.

What is the average cost of pergolas?

Do you want to create a cozy outdoor living space? A pergola is a great way to do this. The average cost of a professionally installed pergola is $4,000, but the total cost can range from $1,050 to $11,000, depending on the size, material, and features. So, if you're looking to install a pergola, expect to pay anywhere from $2,100 to $6,000.

The other thing that we discourage you from looking into or having installed is one of those mechanical louvered systems or the metal pergolas, the aluminum pergolas, or the vinyl pergolas. The reason why is that we have seen those systems over our last 40 Years of building Pergolas in the Denver metro area and we've seen those different manufacturers come and go. So if you have a vinyl pergola installed or a plastic-type pergola installed or an aluminum pergola installed, after a few years if given enough heavy hail storms those systems get damaged. The mechanical louvers no longer function and the big concern is when you go to file a warranty claim these companies may not be in business any longer. They could be good systems for other climates but not in our Colorado climate, where we get heavy duty hail, and if you’ve been living in Colorado for more than the last five or six years, you'll know we get some pretty massive hail storms so rough cedar is the right material for that.

What is the purpose of a deck pergola?

A pergola over a deck is the perfect way to extend your living space outdoors and make the most of your outdoor area. It creates the perfect outdoor oasis under the sun, providing light shade to make even the warmest afternoons enjoyable. For added protection, you can even install a retractable shade cover for extra shade and comfort. With a pergola, you can make the most of your outdoor living space.

We recommend a solid stain as opposed to a transparent stain just because it doesn't need to be done as often. Anytime we're doing a Pergola in a deck environment, we're making sure we incorporate the rails nicely into the pergola, so it looks very well-thought-out. Typically with a Pergola being installed over a deck, in most cases, homeowners are only wanting to cover 50% or two-thirds of the space, so that they have the option to be in the sun and the option to be in the shade.
